Dr. Sanjay Kumar
Aashray Adhikar Abhiyan (AAA) came into existence in the year 2010 as a registered organization. As the name suggests, it is a campaign to provide the right to shelter to the homeless and those far away from their basic rights.
Even though we have been working on homelessness since 2000, earlier it was an internal program of Action Aid, an international organization. Here people from many areas of the society gave their cooperation and contribution. Some people worked as employees of Action Aid and some people worked as volunteers. In the period from 2002- 2006, most of the employees working here left the organization in search of their better future. During the same time, there was a lack of organizations working on-ground for the homeless people. In this adverse situation, we accepted this as a challenge and continued to evolve our AAA.
Ms Paramjeet Kaur
After June 2003, the speed and extent with which the work has been done for the homeless has proved to be a milestone not only in the city of Delhi but also in the whole of India. Breakthroughs in shelter management, health, education, citizenship entitlements, capacity building, media & advocacy, research & policy, and training of hundreds of students- we have played a leading role in every field and have enriched millions of lives!
At every point, we have directly engaged the homeless community in our work and celebrations as we believe they are our real strength and are leading changemakers.
Today AAA comprises of a team of more than 100 people, belonging majorly from DBA communities and with people previously homeless. We have ensured an ethical relationship with the homeless community, who continue to be the foundation of our organization. And it is these warm relationships that we have built on our way, that keeps us hopeful and optimistic towards an inclusive tomorrow!
In 2010 AAA was officially registered, with Ms. Param Jeet and Dr. Sanjay Kumar as the Founders. They shared ‘on one hand we were facing on-ground hardships of homelessness with great commitment and on the other hand, we were internally going through organizational transitioning and stability. It has been tough, but it’s all worth it for our community!’
The journey since then has been wholesome. AAA was not only established as an independent and strong organization but also dedicated many important works with utmost promptness to the homeless community and the last cadre of the society.
